Jalapa and the search for wrapper leaf

A Cigar Aficionado report with Néstor Andrés Plasencia shows how wrapper is worked in Jalapa. Cultivation under netting coexists there with fields destined for filler.

Wrapper requires a surface suitable for covering the cigar and a structure that can withstand the work of rolling. For that reason, studying its origin also means looking at how the leaf is protected and selected.

In a tour of Jalapa published in September 2026, Gregory Mottola documents Plasencia crops grown under netting to filter the light. The report also shows sun-grown fields destined for filler. The region therefore plays more than one role in manufacturing.

The visit shows a continuity between field and barn. After the leaf has been protected and harvested, its moisture must be removed gradually during curing while preserving a texture suitable for working. The wrapper we see on a finished piece sums up that chain of care, as well as the selection that decides its destination.
