Whether a leaf is destined for wrapper, binder or filler influences cultivation decisions. Habanos explains the contrast between protection under cloth for wrapper and sun-growing for the inner components.

The cigar begins with agricultural decisions related to the use the leaf will have. Understanding that destination makes it possible to connect the plant with the structure of the finished cigar.

Habanos explains that it grows wrapper leaf under a cloth cover, called tapado, that filters the light. For filler and binder it describes growing in the sun. In its system, these practices seek materials suited to the functions they will later perform.

In this explanation, the wrapper is protected during cultivation and is then selected for its suitability for the exterior. Leaf destined for the interior follows a different path. When looking at a field under mesh, the interesting question is what material that system seeks to produce and how its destination is assessed afterwards.
