Ecuador produces wrappers from different seeds. Cigar Aficionado links its growing areas to a cloud cover that filters the light and distinguishes provenance from variety.
A wrapper can bear the name of a seed and have been grown in another country. Ecuador offers a particularly useful example for learning to separate those two references.
Cigar Aficionado’s glossary describes growing areas near Guayaquil and the Andean foothills, where cloud cover filters the light. It also mentions the use of Connecticut, Sumatra and Habano seeds in the production of Ecuadorian wrappers.
A seed can travel, while the leaf is grown and worked in a specific place. That is why “Ecuador Connecticut” brings together two distinct references. It is a good formula for learning to read provenances: the first term locates the field and the second keeps the seed type reported by the producer.
